5-th Lyceum of Volos, Greece

The 5th High School of Volos  Magnesia , is a public school with students aged between 15 and 17 years. It is located in an industrial area in the  East Central Greece, by Pagasitikos Bay. Today, due to the economic crisis the city is plagued by a lack of resources and, therefore, many students are unable to further extracurricular learning opportunities outside of formal schooling.

We have 271 students and employ 40 teachers a year, which provide all possible learning opportunities within and outside the education system, spending time and for extracurricular activities such as theatre, concerts, sports, reading.

We participate in national health and cultural programs every year. Students come mainly from the middle class and some from underprivileged social environments (family unemployment, single-parent families) low income. We have also children from countries such as Albania, Russia, Romania.

The school is the core of social and educational integration not only for students but also for the whole local community, through initiatives such as: organizing educational and cultural events in cultural centres and at school, open to the local community, excellent and effective cooperation of local associations (parents and cultural, sporting environment) with the school community to provide knowledge and skills (such as computers), participation in student competitions (mathematics, sports, translation, chemistry, biology, etc.), we offer any kind of support to families with feeding or health problems, we have organized seminars for teachers, parents and students on issues related to in-school violence, health and the early school leaving .

We completed a Comenius project (2011-2013) about the Environmental protection. It was a large opening for our school to the European Community and a great experience for students and teachers.

The school aims to innovation practices of teaching youth, the awareness and understanding of other cultures, giving to teachers but also to later students the opportunity to develop a network of international contacts, to actively participate in the society and to develop a sense of European citizenship and identity.

Our teachers with this project will have the opportunity to bring skills and to communicate effectively with other educational partners. We will acquire knowledge about the management of European programs of the 21st century. We will improve our skills in using new technologies. Learning to use creative technologies to meet the specific learning needs, we will ensure positive results in teaching-learning for our students.
